Past & Future

Our History

Our History

How we started
In 2017 a dream was formed, and a small group of enthusiasts began work to bring community theatre back to Goldthwaite. Since then, our nonprofit corporation has been very instrumental in the purchase of the historic, two-story rock building on the northeast corner of Fisher and Third, where the original "Opera House" began in the late 1800's.

Even during the COVID pandemic, we produced several plays, sponsored numerous events and raised funds through local contributions and grants to begin the much needed restoration of the building.

Our goal is to have a fully functional theater with all the old character of the original "Opera House." It will entail a lot of hard work, help from the community and outside, but a vision that will bring vitality and enjoyment to our community, county, and surrounding areas.

Did you know?
Lawrence Welk and his orchestra once performed at the Dixie Theatre — actually on the roof of the attached building. You can still see the place where stairs used to lead up to the rooftop venue.

Our Future

Our Future

The Goldthwaite Theatre has come a long way—thanks to the incredible support of our community, friends, and patrons. But we’re not finished yet. Our dream is to fully restore this beloved venue into a vibrant, welcoming space for live performances, movies, school events, and community gatherings. Every improvement brings us closer to that goal. With your help, we can ensure the Goldthwaite Theatre continues to inspire, entertain, and unite generations to come.

Recent Accomplishments

Thanks to our generous donors, the theatre has recently completed several major improvements:

  • Installation of air conditioning, heating, and insulation (with help from a Lower Colorado River Authority grant)
  • Replacement of roof support poles to allow a clear audience view
  • Removal of a 20′ × 30′ wooden platform, revealing the original stage and orchestra pit and expanding seating to 120
  • Closure of exterior windows
  • New front doors and a new side roll-up door
  • Construction of a dressing room
  • Electrical service upgrade
  • Addition of an exterior lighted marquee
  • Floor repairs
  • Installation of fire extinguishers

Planned Improvements

We have ambitious plans for the next stage of restoration. Our current fundraising efforts will help us:
